Having worked with multinational corporations (MNCs) and quasi governments in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Mr Gu has over 30 years of senior management and consultancy experience in Singapore, China, Australia, and 28 South Pacific countries. He has profound knowledge and a well-established international network in Asia Pacific in manufacturing and the marketing of the food and agriculture products.
During his professional career, he spent 10 years working with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN). As a Post-Harvest Consultant, he gave consultancy on marine products in Asia Pacific countries, helping the later develop the sustainable inshore marine and fisheries industry. In addition, he has 20 years of experience in managing businesses in the following sectors: Manufacturing, Research & Development, Marketing & Distribution, Commodities Trading, Agri-Food, F&B, Value-added solutions & products, especially focus on functional/tonic foods and beverages, such as Asian tonic products including abalones, sea cucumbers, cordyceps, ginseng extract and functional drinks.
In 1992, he established the world’s first sea cucumber laboratory and developed an advanced sea cucumber processing technology for fishermen in Fiji. The technology was highly regarded and received an award from Fiji Government. In addition, the technology was adopted by South Pacific island countries, including Australian and New Zealand when developing their own sea cucumbers and other marine resources in their respective waters in the mid-1990’s and onward.
Mr. Gu has more than 20 years of experience in the food and agricultural technology industry. He invented formulated and developed the processing technology for the world’s first Abalone Sauce when he worked as a Food Technologist in Australia in 1990, and it was acquired by the Australia agri giant Elders in 2007. In 1995 he worked with senior scientists from the Ministry of Fishery of New Zealand and were the first to explore and pioneer the pilot processing sea cucumbers from low temperature sea bottom in New Zealand’s Maori water. In 1996 he worked with Ministry for Primary Industries of Queensland Australia to formalise the management tools for Australian sea cucumber resources of Great Barrier Reef, and his work led to the establishment of the sea cucumber quota system in Queensland and Western Australian waters.
Mr Gu obtained his Master’s Degree in Biology, majoring in Plant Eco-Physiology in 1988. He qualified as an Engineer in Light Industry in 1989.
Mr. Gu is the founder of SCU and the inventor of SCU’s Dendrobium Officinale orchid stem cell technology. He has successfully researched and developed techniques to rapidly grow, reproduce, culture and extract the Dendrobium Officinale medicinal orchid plant stem cell technology. His invention only requires 3 months rather than usual 3-5 years to achieve marketable Dendrobium Officinale products.
