Assaf Gavish is a biology researcher and startup founder with over 7 years of expertise in plant science, imaging and image analysis.
After graduate high school with a major in bio-technology and an army service as a combat officer, Gavish worked as an irrigation team leader in a kibbutz, where he discovered his admiration of plants and agriculture.
In his B.Sc. in Biology at the Tel Aviv University, he developed a novel method to track plant disease using imaging. The plant pathogen researched was the fungus Botrytis cinerea, one of cannabis’s major pathogens.
Gavish completed a M.Sc. in Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science, one of Israel’s leading research centers. In collaboration with MIT researchers, he designed and utilized a novel micro-fluidics method for visualization of coral and algae disease under the microscope. This work fortified Gavish’s expert status in advanced light microscopy and image analysis algorithm development.
In mid 2015, when Gavish realized the cannabis industry’s potential he left the direct PhD track in favor of pursuing an independent path. He worked as a grower at Better, one of Israel’s first and best medical cannabis farms, and later worked as a market analyst for a vertical indoor cultivation startup.
Early in 2016, Gavish partnered with Asaf Levy to work on a machine vision based diagnostics startup HiGrade, aiming to serve cannabis cultivators and consumers. He studied the then-new field of deep learning algorithms for machine vision and completed the company’s several first POCs. Nowadays, HiGrade is serving hundreds of users worldwide under the name HiGrade. Gavish is HiGrade’s co-founder and chief scientific officer.
